Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO 3 ) or baking soda (soda bicarbonate) is a white powder that dissolves in water to form a solution with an alkaline pH .
Sodium bicarbonate is used as a component of baking powders and effervescent powders for beverages, to neutralize acid burns .
It is also used as a filling for fire extinguishers .
It can also be used for teeth whitening, softening foods cooked in water, cleaning in the home, and absorbing unwanted odors.
The body secretes it in the stomach as part of the mucus lining . If there is not enough of it, the stomach becomes overacidic and " heartburn " occurs.
The neutralization of gastric juices can be helped by consuming baking soda.
For the same reason, it is often included in animal feed mixtures under the name baking soda, because such purity is not required here.
